Gate Attendant & Cashier

Job Description

Responsible for accepting incoming deliveries of green waste.  This position is critical to ensure that the load source is validated and there is no contamination of the load.

Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. May be assigned to work non-traditional hours as required including one or two weekends per month. Also responsible for assisting and working at other facilities within GWT. Candidates will be asked to cross-train and/or serve as coverage for other gate attendants at GWT locations.

Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. The position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and GWT policies.

Gate Attendant Specific Responsibilities
  • Utilize software on tablet provided to capture pertinent customer information upon gate arrival.
  • Utilize thermal and photographic technology along with visual inspections of incoming loads to validate load contents and any contaminants.
  • Measures/weighs customer vehicles to determine load capacity, calculate tipping fees, collect appropriate fees and issues receipt.
  • Collects fees and balances cash/checks daily, as well as prepares daily deposits.
  • Directs customers to designated unloading area, performs the duties of the spotter, as required, and assigned.
  • Deals with customer complaints; apprises customers of green waste requirements and fees; resolves issues face-to-face or seeks supervisory assistance.
  • Provides prompt, courteous, and accurate customer service; responds to requests for information on GWT collection sites and services to maintain positive customer service relations.
  • Promptly and courteously answers the gate house/office telephone and provides accurate information in response to inquiries.
  • Responds to customers’ questions regarding prices, acceptable waste, hours of operation, and directions to facility or other GWT facilities.
  • Performs custodial duties to maintain the gatehouse, surrounding area and equipment in a safe and clean condition.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Cashier Specific Responsibilities
  • Accurately performs general accounting related duties pertaining to the receipt of cash and check receipts to ensure the integrity of the financial system.
  • Promptly, courteously, and accurately receives cash, checks and/or credit payments for green waste disposal transactions.
  • Operates a cash register and makes appropriate change, processes credit cards and digital wallet transactions.
  • Issue receipts to customers remitting payments.
  • Balances the cash daily using receipts, cash, and an adding machine; identifies errors and takes appropriate steps to remedy and/or report to the supervisor if not remedied.
  • Safeguards all receipt of cash/checks in accordance with accounting policies and procedures and submits daily revenues and reports to supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Prefer high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in cashiering or accounting to include six (6) months’ customer service experience.
  • Scale attendant/landfill experience a plus.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in working with Microsoft Windows PC applications (word processing, spreadsheets, and email software).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in math skills with a high degree of accuracy with keyboard input and cash transactions.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with constant interruptions and to work on more than one task at a time.
  • Ability to work alone and with minimal supervision and to adhere to all company policies and procedures relating to cash handling.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed or requested.
  • Strong English language abilities and clear and neat writing ability.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
Skills & Physical Demands of Job
  • The position functions within a hectic setting with exposure to dust and musty odors.
  • Moderate physical position involves bending and stooping.
  • Operation of a cash register and adding machine.
  • High degree of customer contact requires strong verbal abilities and the ability to read at a high school level.
  • Standing is 90% of the workday.
Work Situation Factors
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Outdoor exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain or dust.
  • Prolonged exposure to the noise and vibrations.
  • Position may require extended hours, shift work, and on-call status.
  • Involves competing demands, constant interruptions, handling multiple tasks at one time.
  • May be assigned to work non-traditional hours as required including one or two weekends per month.
  • Workdays are spent entirely around the Gate House area; timing of lunch and bathroom breaks to correspond with flow of customers into the GWT collection site.
Requirements
  • Must wear company provided safety equipment.
  • Steel toe boots (not supplied).
Salary Range
  • Commensurate with candidate’s education and experience .
