Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Description

Responsible for safely and efficiently driving, maneuvering, and controlling various types of heavy equipment, including Excavators, Loaders, Dozers, Dump Trucks, Backhoes, Trommels, Forklifts, Water Truck, etc.  Responsible for inspecting equipment before and after use, load and unload cargo, move large pallets of inventory from one area to another and maintain records. When necessary, perform routine maintenance on the equipment or recommend they be sent out for repairs. Equipment operators must always follow company and governmental safety guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Safely operate heavy-duty trucks and trailers and remain vigilant of conditions surrounding the use of equipment.
  • Recognize and take necessary precautions against hazardous driving conditions.
  • Drive in a smooth, careful, and safe manner.
  • Detect motor trouble and take prompt precautions to avoid breakdowns and damage to equipment and cargo.
  • Properly load and unload equipment and when necessary to direct helpers.
  • Load, secure, and unload heavy equipment, ensuring proper weight distribution and adherence to safety regulations.
  • Thoroughly inspect vehicles and equipment before and after each operation to identify potential issues.
  • Maintain logs of mileage, fuel consumption, and any incidents encountered during operation.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies, including DOT guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding equipment operations.
  • Troubleshoot minor mechanical issues and perform basic maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Make adjustments and emergency repairs to equipment operated.
  • Familiar working with signalers, two-way radios and hand signals.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of proper operation of heavy equipment as well as safety standards and regulations is crucial.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance including tire pressure, checking oil and water levels.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Strong work ethic.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a commercial driver license (CDL) valid for the operation of any combination of heavy equipment.
  • One year of experience (within the last ten years) in operating heavy compound transmission motor truck tractors with semitrailer or heavy motor truck and trailer equipment.
  • OSHA Credentials preferred.
Environmental and Physical Factors
  • Be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.
  • Extensive physical activity. Requires strenuous physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required objects over 50 pounds.
Work Situation Factors
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Outdoor exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain or dust.
  • Prolonged exposure to the noise and vibrations.
  • Position may require extended hours, shift work, and on-call status.

  • Successful candidate must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
